In fact I find the latest S&W revolvers better than the ones I bought in the 1980's.Smith-Wesson is one of the world's largest manufacturers of quality firearms and firearm safety/security products. As an aside, I find nothing wrong with the change to MIM parts in the later guns. My 657 41 mag is still a six inch barrel gun but today I would have bought it as a 4 incher too. They are so much handier and shoot for me about the same as the longer barreled versions. Even though my 44 mag 629 came as a 7+ inch version I changed out the barrel to a 4 inch. It is an excellent revolver! I have come to prefer 4 inch versions of my S&W Revolvers. I have the 686Plus that is a seven shot bought in 2/99. The -4 list of changes says "many changes including move to 7 shot, sight changes etc." 6 is when S&W started putting the lock on the 686 -5 and earlier are all pre-lock, and -4 and earlier are all pre-MIM hammer/trigger (-4s had a MIM thumbpiece). 1994 thru 1998 - many changes including move to 7 shot, sight changes etc.Ħ86-5 had the move to MIM parts and frame mounted firing pin From what I've been able to find, here is the history:Ħ86-1, 1986 - radius stud package and floating handĦ86-M - 1987 recall stamping on earlier versionsĦ86-2, 1987, hammer nose change, bushing and ***'d partsĦ86-4. ![]()
